When a newborn baby’s system is unable to process bilirubin effectively, they develop a condition known as jaundice. Often characterized by the yellowing of the skin and eyes, research indicates that this condition is quite common, with approximately sixty percent of newborns reported to experience it.

Jaundice is often the first sign of kernicterus, a serious condition caused by very high levels of bilirubin in the blood. While jaundice typically resolves without long-term consequences, untreated or inadequately treated cases can lead to kernicterus, resulting in irreversible brain damage due to bilirubin accumulation in the brain.

Treatment options for kernicterus include phototherapy or blood exchange transfusion. If kernicterus is detected and treated early on, a baby is typically able to recover fully from the condition; however, in severe cases where significant brain damage has occurred, a full recovery may not be possible. Untreated kernicterus is associated with long term-complications such as cerebral palsy, vision problems, hearing loss, seizures, and learning difficulties.

Failure to properly monitor bilirubin levels or administer appropriate treatment or medical interventions, resulting in brain damage or other long-term complications from kernicterus, may constitute medical malpractice. If you or a loved one’s child has been the victim of medical negligent, don’t hesitate. Contact a kernicterus lawyer at Pribanic & Pribanic today.

“What should I do if I experience health problems?”

First, seek medical treatment if you are developing health symptoms. Second, consider getting a baseline of your entire health, like blood tests and organ function, in case anything changes. And there are other steps you can take to improve your chances of securing compensation, like preserving evidence. Take photographs or videos of anything involved that you think led to your injury.

It is also important to be careful about what you sign or what you say to companies involved in your injury. They are trying to limit their liability and may try to get you to sign documents or make statements that hurt your case. To ensure your rights are protected in your state consult with an experienced attorney first.
